The National League acquired a ton of talent in the 2024 MLB Draft, led by Chase Barnes to the Cincinnati Reds and Charlie Condon to the Colorado Rockies. Below are our thoughts on each National League team’s draft class. You can find our American League ratings here.
National League East
Atlanta Braves
The Braves made a big splash by taking Cam Caminiti with the 24th pick in the first round. Caminiti was a potential top 10 talent in the 2025 draft before he reclassified. They took Carter Holton in the second round, who is expected to develop quickly in the system once healthy. The Braves then gambled on the upside by adding Luke Sinard (healthy), Nick Montgomery (hitting/defense), and Kayman Good (undeveloped) in the draft. Combine that with a combination of advanced tools and intriguing pitchers like Ethan Bagwell, Owen Hackman, and Patrick Clohisy, and you should have a very strong draft.
Class A-
Miami Marlins
The Marlins’ draft is difficult to immediately evaluate because, although they were significantly overdrafted in the first round with P.J. Moreland, the savings allowed them to acquire 10 top 250 prospects and stockpile talent. Carter Johnson at No. 56 was a great player, but the acquisitions of Gage Miller, Peyton Green, Jacob Jenkins-Cowart, Dub Gleed and Cody Schrier added quality players to their system. Nick Brink, Grant Shepherdson, Fenwick Trimble and Jake Faherty combine both quantity and quality.
Rating: B-
New York Mets
The additions of Carson Benge and Jonathan Santucci were the start of a great draft for the New York Mets. Tanner Witt is still a top talent but has yet to show his true potential due to a string of injuries. If he stays healthy and develops, that could be three first-round picks.
Rating: B
Philadelphia Phillies
Dante Nori in the first round was a bit of a shock, but if they went that direction, the next few rounds would be filled with super high-flyers, which the Phillies didn’t seem to do. Griffin Burkholder, Carson DeMartini and Carter Matheson are solid picks, but third-rounder John Spikerman is questionable due to his lack of power. Cam’Ron Hill and Brady Day were very good day three picks with a lot of potential, but overall this draft seems a bit underwhelming.
Rating: C+
Washington Nationals
Washington’s draft got off to an interesting start with the selection of Seaver King, who is undoubtedly a first-round talent but was out of reach at No. 10. Washington used a competitive balance pick to acquire the best catcher in the draft, Caleb Lomavita, and the athletic Luke Dickerson, who has great potential, in Round 2. Kevin Bazzell is another great value at catcher if he can establish himself as a catcher.
Rating: B+
National League Central
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs had a great day one draft with infielders Cam Smith and Cole Mathis. Days two and three got a bit more interesting with the selections of Ty Southington, Cole Mathis and Ronny Crews. The Cubs also picked up another intriguing super prospect in Ivan Bresower. Overall, this is a solid draft that may not be a pure prospect from the outside, but that Cubs scouts will surely like.
Rating: B
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds had a great draft starting with Chase Barnes. They were also able to acquire super athletic infielder Tyson Lewis and four-pitch pitcher Luke Holman on Day 1. The Reds then picked outfielder Mike Sirota in the third round, which was a very valuable draft choice. Finally, adding players like Tristan Smith, who was the best pitcher out of high school, and Peyton Stovall, they had a very strong draft before Day 3.
Class A
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers got some really good players in Braylon Payne, Blake Burke, Bryce Mecage and Chris Lebonas, but the question remains as to whether they should have acquired more valuable players with their four picks in the first 67. If they can tap into the potential of Mason Molina and Kaedmon Parker, they’ll definitely be closer to the B range.
Rating: B-
Pittsburgh Pirates
Connor Griffin has the potential to be truly outstanding and could turn this draft into an absolute win for the Pirates. It’s a bit early to pick Levi Sterling in a competitive balance round, but having Wyatt Sanford at No. 47 helps balance things out. If the Pirates can unlock the potential of Josh Hartle and Will Taylor, this is a great draft. Add in Matt Ager and Deuce Gorson and this is an easy A grade. There’s a lot of risk in this class, but there’s a lot to like.
Class A
St. Louis Cardinals
What was the Cardinals draft room like when top prospect JJ Weatherholt was available at No. 7? Bryan Holiday was slightly overdrafted, but his balanced use of five pitches and excellent control make him a sure bet for the major leagues. Signing Brendan Lawson would be a big win for the Cardinals, who did well in this draft.
Rating: B+
National League West
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks followed up a strong first day with the addition of two highly-rated outfielders in Slade Caldwell and Ryan Waldschmidt with a very strong draft on Day 2, adding three top 250 picks in Daniel Egan, Titus Cissell and Connor Foley, and adding some intriguing pitchers in Mason Marriott and Kyle Ayers to give Arizona a very strong draft.
Class A-
Colorado Rockies
It’s fair to say the Rockies needed a draft like this, as it would net them a lot of high-end prospects. The Rockies must have been ecstatic when they got Charlie Condon to third. They then got Brody Brecht, who has two plus pitches and is already MLB-worthy if he improves his control a bit. Then they got Jarrett Thomas, who does a lot of stuff, and Cole Messina, who is a slugger. Connor Eaton is also a high-potential prospect, but comes with risks.
Class A
Los Angeles Dodgers
No surprise there, as the Dodgers have landed yet another strong draft prospect. Kellon Lindsay and Chase Harlan are two very intriguing players and would be great talent to acquire in the 15th round if Eric Parker signs. Jacob Wright may have been a bit of an overdraft, but is still a good pitcher with great potential.
Class A-
San Diego Padres
The Padres did a great job adding a ton of top prospects with Kash Mayfield, Boston Bateman and Cobb Hightower, who is an interesting player in his own right, and then adding Cavares Tears, Tyson Neighbors and Clark Candiotti on Day 2 rounded out the draft class for a very good one.
Rating: B
San Francisco Giants
While the Giants didn’t have second- or third-round picks, they still did well acquiring talented players like James Thibs III, Dakota Jordan and Robert Hipwell, with Jordan in particular being a potential bargain at No. 34. The Giants also rounded out the draft nicely with the additions of Jacob Christian, Xander Darby and Jeremiah Jenkins on days two and three.
