Sometimes, it’s clear you’ve made a mistake.
Judge Bill Miller had an amusing, albeit inappropriate, moment when the Red Sox defeated the Twins 6-1 on Friday night. It happened during a review of a call at the plate that challenged their earlier decision.
“F-K,” Miller exclaimed as the Fenway crowd began booing his judgment while Boston was comfortably leading. “F-King saw that too, Goddammit.”
Warning: Strong Language
While the purpose of replay is to clarify calls, it’s evident that umpires can feel the pressure of their mistakes.
The incident occurred in the eighth inning, following a strong performance by Boston against the struggling Twins.
A relay from center fielder Byron Buxton to Carlos Correa set up a close play at the plate involving catcher Ryan Jeffers, where Miller initially ruled that Duran was safe.
After Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli contested the call, the two Boston announcers both recognized that the Twins likely had tagged the speedy center fielder correctly.
“Just an all-around solid baseball game,” one announcer noted.
Miller later had to admit his error to the crowd, but he found some solace in knowing that the ruling didn’t heavily impact the game’s outcome.
“Runners are out,” Miller said, evoking a wave of displeasure from the fans. “Minnesota holds it.”
Miller, who just turned 58, began his major league umpiring career in 1999 and even served as the crew chief for the 2023 World Series. Throughout his tenure, he has worked multiple postseason games and has held the Crew Chief designation since 2014.
