During a recent game on Friday, Miami Marlins first baseman Matt Mervis encountered a tough situation. While playing against the Athletics, a throw from shortstop Xavier Edwards led to a misunderstanding. Mervis attempted to make a play on a short hop but missed it, resulting in an unfortunate incident for him.
The ground ball, hit by Athletics’ second baseman Luis Urias, caused Mervis considerable pain when he tried to field it incorrectly. It’s quite startling, really; he ended up sitting down, resting his face on his gloves as the trainer came to his aid. Thankfully, he decided to stay in the game, but not without grimacing.
Edwards received an error for his misthrow, and this costly mistake came at a bad time. The Marlins were already in a tight spot with two outs when the ball struck Mervis, allowing Seth Brown to score and pushing the Athletics to a 6-0 lead.
In another noteworthy moment, Athletics pitcher Gunnar Hoglund made his MLB debut, successfully pitching six innings, allowing just one run, while the Marlins’ Valente Verozo struggled a bit, giving up five runs across four and two-thirds innings.
The Athletics, now standing at 18-15, are set to face the Marlins (12-19) again on Saturday at 4:10 PM ET, continuing this three-game series.
