Democrat Advocates for Mass Amnesty of Undocumented Workers

A self-identified moderate Democrat has expressed a strong desire to provide amnesty for millions of undocumented immigrants, which he claims will help them avoid deportation. Representative Tom Suozzi (D-NY) stated in a recent speech that he aims to legalize anywhere from seven to ten million individuals living in the country without proper documentation.

This call for mass amnesty has drawn attention, particularly from the Republican National Committee, but it highlights a long-standing tension within the Democratic Party. Suozzi, often branded as a moderate by mainstream media, seems to lean heavily on progressive values that prioritize the needs of immigrants over American citizens. This has caused some critics to question where his loyalties truly lie.

In an essay from August 2025, Suozzi elaborated on his personal connection to immigration, noting that his own family has an immigrant background. He reflected on the journey of his grandparents, who moved to the United States from Italy with little and worked hard to build a life. Their story resonates with his views on the importance of immigration, as he feels it directly relates to the American dream.

This trend isn’t unique to Suozzi; many Democrats show a preference for supporting migrants, especially in districts with significant immigrant populations. However, the sympathy isn’t always a one-sided affair. Some Republican figures have also expressed concerns about deportations negatively impacting citizens. For instance, retiring Representative Don Bacon (R-NE) shared his frustrations in the Washington Post about the deportation of an undocumented immigrant he helped advocate for, emphasizing the challenges in retaining workers during a labor shortage.

Suozzi’s advocacy for migrants aligns with progressive economic goals, which sometimes clash with the interests of American workers. In a January 2026 statement, he complained about rising wages, attributing the changes to decreased numbers of workers due to deportations under previous administrations. This assertion indicates a belief that the presence of undocumented workers is crucial for managing wage levels and economic stability.

Interestingly, the rise in wages, while beneficial for many American families, can pose issues for some progressive politicians. Increased wages tend to lessen the appeal of their economic agendas among voters. This sentiment echoes among various establishment Republicans too, particularly when donor profits are at stake.

In his op-ed, Bacon underscored this economic concern, noting that ongoing deportations are counterproductive at a time when the workforce needs to expand. Despite being labeled a moderate, Suozzi’s immigration policies appear more aligned with President Biden’s robust support for immigration than the centrist approach he claims to represent. Biden’s administration has similarly aimed to utilize immigration to bolster economic growth, even if it compromises the needs of American workers in the process.

Looking at international examples, Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, pointed out how other countries adapt their immigration policies based on labor market needs. However, in the United States, outdated visa caps hinder such flexibility. The recent influx of roughly ten million undocumented migrants under Biden has stirred controversies, including impacting job availability, housing prices, and causing a ripple effect leading to historical shifts in political landscapes.

In contrast, the policies enacted during Trump’s administration are noted for potentially generating more economic opportunities for American citizens, highlighting the ongoing debate about immigration and its implications for both the economy and society at large.
