Missing North Carolina Mother Found After 24 Years

A North Carolina mother, who went missing over two decades ago, was recently located alive. Authorities reported that she was separated from her family due to “ongoing domestic issues.”

Michelle Handley Smith, who vanished in December 2001, was found on February 20 after detectives received new leads about her case, according to police. Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page stated, “There was no allegation of foul play involved in her departure. However, there were domestic issues at the time.” He noted that Ms. Smith didn’t provide further details about these matters.

Interestingly, the sheriff mentioned that there was no record of any domestic incidents involving the family. At the time of her disappearance, Ms. Smith was 38 years old when her husband reported she left their home in Eden to go Christmas shopping in Martinsville, Virginia, on December 9, 2001; she never returned, and her car was never located.

This case set off a significant investigation that involved various agencies in both North Carolina and Virginia. This included the State Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the FBI. When she was finally found, Page affirmed that she was in good health.

On February 22, Amanda Smith, Michelle’s daughter, shared her reflections in a Facebook post about the emotional journey of the last couple of days for their family. She asked the public to keep their opinions private, saying, “We are hurting and going through so much.”

Amanda clarified that her father had faced numerous accusations over the years, even before social media became prominent. She expressed frustration towards the community’s assumptions about her father’s involvement, asserting his innocence while acknowledging that, like many couples, her parents had experienced marital struggles. Yet, she emphasized that her mother’s decision to leave wasn’t simply a result of a troubled marriage.

Despite a lengthy search spanning many years, Smith’s location remained a mystery until recently when detectives were able to find her in a positive state of mind at an undisclosed location in North Carolina. Sheriff Page commented, “You don’t see many missing person cases like this. At least now, the family has closure and knows she’s okay.” The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted for further comments.
