A dramatic situation unfolded in Montana recently when a dog owner had to fend off a moose attack to protect her pets.
After letting her dogs outside, Shelly Thorburn found herself face-to-face with a large moose and its calf on her porch. The intense encounter took place on August 27 and was recorded on her Ring camera.
“I peeked around the side of the house and there was the mama moose, charging at me with her ears pinned back,” Thorburn recounted.
The moose rushed into her backyard, making grunting noises that frightened two of her dogs away.
However, Thorburn’s 14-year-old dog, Annie, was left behind and seemingly unaware of the danger. “She’s deaf and has vision issues,” Thorburn explained, noting her concern as Annie wandered away amid the chaos.
Thorburn’s panic was evident as she yelled at the moose while running around her yard, desperate to protect her beloved pets and herself.
“I was definitely scared; I mean, I’ve never had such a large animal chase after me,” she said.
In a hurry, she dashed inside to grab a can of bear spray, instinctively knowing she needed to get everyone to safety. “I just wanted to get all of them inside,” she mentioned.
Fortunately, the bear spray worked, and all of her dogs were unharmed in the ordeal.
This suburban incident happened not far from Yellowstone National Park where moose are known to inhabit the area, often without natural fear of humans.
According to local sources, it’s crucial to prioritize safety when encountering moose, as these animals often share the same neighborhoods with residents.
