Montana’s GOP governor fends off challenge from the right, wins primary race

Montana Republican Governor Greg Gianforte has won the state’s Republican primary for governor.

Gianforte was first elected governor of the Big Sky state in 2020, flipping the seat to Republicans and ousting the Democrat who had held it for several years.

Before becoming the state’s 25th governor, Gianforte was a businessman and worked in the private sector for decades.

Mr. Gianforte won the Republican nomination by defeating state Rep. Tanner J. Smith in Tuesday night’s primary election.

The governor was endorsed by former President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, but has yet to receive the endorsement of any 2024 Republican presidential candidate at this point in the campaign.
