Hersheypark Faces Potential Labor Disruption

Hersheypark, a popular Pennsylvania theme park, might be thrown into chaos just before its busy summer season, as union maintenance workers are considering a strike. The park is set to shift to daily operations starting May 21, transitioning from its current schedule of weekends only, coinciding with families gearing up for summer vacations.

However, just days ahead of this expanded schedule, uncertainty looms for over 200 unionized maintenance workers. Hershey Entertainment & Resorts has rejected a “last, best, and final” contract offer after extended negotiations. This prompted concerns about the park’s ability to function during one of its peak tourist seasons, notably as schools will soon be out for the summer.

The maintenance staff includes ride mechanics, electricians, plumbers, welders, and HVAC technicians—essential personnel for ensuring ride safety and maintaining the overall resort facilities.

While negotiations are still ongoing, Hersheypark has assured that plans for the summer season’s opening remain on track. A representative communicated that preparations for May 21 continue, emphasizing the park’s commitment to opening as scheduled.

If the strike were to proceed, it could also impact the operations of Hershey’s Boardwalk Waterpark, which is set to open on May 23. The maintenance workers play a vital role, particularly during this peak time, in keeping rides operational and facilities well-maintained.

Hersheypark ranks among Pennsylvania’s top tourist sites, attracting millions annually from across the Northeast. The park is celebrated for its numerous roller coasters, family rides, live entertainment, and water attractions, making summer one of its most critical operating periods.

At this moment, it’s still uncertain whether the union members will choose to authorize a strike or if an agreement can be reached before the summer season kicks off.
