MORGAN MURPHY: Trump Driving Foreign Policy Blob Crazy By Daring To Put America First

For the past 40 years, American politicians have argued how wars in distant Third World countries implicate vital strategic interests of the United States. From Iraq to Kosovo, American leaders of both parties have wasted trillions of dollars and thousands of lives chasing phantom threats around the world.

The rationale behind these interventions is often based on outright fabrications masked by high-minded rhetoric about the American people. Take President Bill Clinton's 78-day bombing of European capitals, the first since World War II. Clinton pitched intervention as a way to prevent World War III. “We act to prevent wider war. unlock gunpowder magazine It has exploded twice this century in the heart of Europe, with devastating results. ”

Or a few years later, President George W. Bush's claim that “Iraq’s combination is weapons of mass destruction And links with terrorist groups and ballistic missiles will threaten the peace of many countries. ” The American military searched for weapons in Iraq, but nothing came of it. It was probably a pointless sniper hunt. compromised Concurrent U.S. mission to kill or capture Osama bin Laden.

Recently, President Joe Biden announced that Russian leader Vladimir Putincannot remain in power” sounded completely delusional. Was the United States advocating regime change in a country with more nuclear weapons than any other country on earth?

More cautious voices calling for U.S. restraint are often called “isolationists,” but only in places like Washington, D.C., does this become a four-letter word.

As expected, President-elect Donald Trump's victory in November launched a new campaign by Washington DC interventionists to keep the US “engaged” around the world. They are speculating with bated breath that President Trump might take America out of the nation. united nations, cede ukraine Leave it to Russia or leave it to China? take taiwan.

Even Mr. Trump Fellow Republicans criticized The potential risks and costs of America's withdrawal from the world stage.

But while neoconservatives and globalists were still trying to figure out what “America First” meant, Trump started paying attention to Canada. as the 51st state I teased.governor” Prime Minister Trudeau. Greenland was also added to Trump's Amazon Prime cart, and Denmark announced it would increase its defense spending (though Danish Defense Minister Tørs Lund Poulsen called the timing of the announcement “an irony of fate”. Well, I guess so). And then there's Panama. Canal owned by president-elect I swore I'd get it back Unless Panama protects Panama from Chinese influence.

Suddenly, “America First” doesn't seem so isolationist to the Foggy Bottom hunks. Even the most dedicated diplomats likely have a clearer picture of President Trump's foreign policy. The 45th and 47th presidents have demanded that clear U.S. interests be at risk in any military intervention.

In many ways, Trump's worldview revives President James Monroe's 1823 warning to other foreign powers not to interfere in the American hemisphere, a warning that became known as the Warning. It is something that monroe doctrine: “Every attempt should be considered. [by European powers] and to extend their systems into every region of this hemisphere, as it is dangerous to our peace and security. ”

Belief in the Monroe Doctrine is what made the United States the world's greatest power, a regional hegemon. From Germany's threat to ally with Mexico in World War I to Soviet intervention in Cuba, the United States has often used the principles outlined by its fifth president to fend off potential threats. Ta.

There is a flipside to the Monroe Doctrine that is rarely discussed: it does not intervene in unnecessary foreign wars. Only when our rights are violated or seriously threatened do we become indignant or ready to defend ourselves. ”

Wise words. When it comes to foreign interference, President Trump's embrace of the Monroe Doctrine is a revival of the America First approach that dates back to our nation's founding. We can't get here right away.
