Moroccan authorities this week arrested 30 people in the city of Fez on multiple charges as part of a wider case including extortion, intimidation and trafficking of newborns.

North Africa’s state news agency MAP reported on Wednesday that the suspects, including law enforcement officers, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, were arrested earlier this week. They are accused of conspiring with unwed mothers to sell babies to families willing to adopt them.

Their scheme also included extortion, fraud and theft of drugs not sold without a prescription, the report said. Some of the suspects are accused of helping promote abortion, which is illegal in Morocco except in emergencies.
