Moronic tourist under investigation after dumping water on ‘historically significant’ ancient cave paintings for social media

He has the mind of a caveman.

Police say they are currently under investigation after foolish tourists splashed water on ancient cave paintings to improve their social media photos, then posted pictures of the damaged historic artwork.

Local police said the unidentified 39-year-old man from Los Villares, Spain, was seeking “clearer” and brighter images of the priceless artwork, which is thousands of years old and painted in the country’s Sierra Sur de Jaén mountain range.

To get the perfect photo, he splashed the liquid over the priceless painting – part of an archaeological site deemed “historically important” by the country’s cultural heritage body – and then posted the wet photo on Facebook, according to the Guardia Civil’s conservation unit.

Authorities said the ancient artwork was created on limestone, which contains water-soluble salts that dissolve in liquids, coating the surface and causing “irreparable damage” to the paintings. The Daily Beast.

It was not immediately clear when the vandalism took place or what specific images were depicted, but some of the cave art in the area features faded images resembling stick figures painted in dark stains.

Some of the rock paintings in this breathtaking mountain range are thought to be more than 6,000 years old.
