This follows significant left-wing victories earlier this month in Senate primaries by Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed and Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, while the DSA faced a setback in Wisconsin with Congresswoman Francesca Hong’s loss. The focus now shifts to Florida, where Larkin is up against the more centrist Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz in a crucial congressional battle, essential for determining the Republican majority in the midterms.
Democratic Group Launches Major Campaign Against DSA
In the coming weeks, Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, known for his progressive leadership, will be confronted by moderate Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton in an intriguing primary. This race reflects deeper divisions within the party as Kentuckians, particularly in the Senate, look to secure critical seats to reclaim control from Republicans.
Progressives recently celebrated a significant win with El-Sayed’s narrow victory over moderate Rep. Haley Stevens, making strides in the Great Lakes battleground amidst ongoing shifts.
Meanwhile, Flanagan achieved a decisive victory against moderate Rep. Angie Craig for the nomination in Minnesota, showing strength as a left-wing candidate. Both El-Sayed and Flanagan enjoyed support from high-profile progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Contrastingly, in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial primary, Hong’s campaign faced challenges, ultimately losing to David Crowley, who had the backing of the outgoing governor. Misdirected past statements about defunding the police contributed to her defeat, which some believe would have strengthened Republican chances in the state.
As the primary season advances, Larkin, a 33-year-old veteran of Sanders’ 2016 campaign, stands out as the sole DSA-endorsed House candidate in a significant contest. He expressed controversial ideas, such as calling for the abolition of the Senate, labeling it as undemocratic. Additionally, he agreed with New York’s socialist Mayor Zoran Mamdani, asserting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu deserved arrest during his recent U.S. visit, condemning Israel’s ruling coalition.
In contrast, Moskowitz is a strong supporter of Israel, advocating for military assistance from the United States.
Generational Conflict in Massachusetts
Markey’s re-election campaign sees endorsements from figures such as Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, signaling robust party backing. Moulton represents a more moderate faction, igniting a broader discourse about generational change within the party, as Markey, at 80, faces criticism about legacy versus modern leadership.
A similar narrative unfolds in Massachusetts’s 8th Congressional District, where long-serving Rep. Stephen Lynch faces a challenge from younger Rep. Patrick Roos, juxtaposing experienced politicians against emerging voices.
New Hampshire’s Upcoming Senate Race
Following these races, attention will turn to New Hampshire as Senator Jeanne Shaheen prepares to retire.
