Most Americans in new poll see situation at border as a crisis, serious problem

Most Americans believe the situation at the border is a crisis or a serious problem, according to a new poll.

of CBS News new poll According to the survey, 45% of Americans view the border situation as a crisis, and an additional 30% view the border situation as a serious problem. According to the poll, 18% said the border situation was somewhat serious, while 7% said it was not a problem at all.

The move comes as lawmakers continue to battle over major border security reforms proposed by Republicans who have long criticized the Biden administration's handling of border and immigration policies. Asked how the Biden administration should move forward with migrants crossing the border, 63% said they should take tougher policies, up from 55% who said the same in September.

Just 16% say it should be easier for migrants to cross the border, down slightly from 19% who said so in September. 21% of respondents said the Biden administration is handling things appropriately, also down 5 percentage points from September.

The poll also asked respondents what they thought about Republican governors sending immigrants to Democratic-led cities upstate. 57% of respondents disapproved of the measure, up from 50% in September.

Both President Biden and Republicans received poor ratings for their handling of the U.S.-Mexico border issue. Sixty-eight percent of respondents said they disapproved of Biden's handling of the border crisis, and 65% said they disapproved of how Republicans in Congress were handling the border crisis.

The poll was conducted among 2,157 adults between January 3 and 5, and has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
