The poll also asked U.S. voters who they believed was to blame for “the current state of the U.S.-Mexico border.” Most Republicans condemn President Joe Biden (73%), compared to 68% of Democrats in Congress. Only 27% of Democratic voters blamed Biden, while 58% blamed Republicans in Congress and 53% blamed former President Donald Trump. Among independents, 45% blamed Biden, 44% blamed Democrats in Congress, 38% blamed Republicans in Congress, and 29% blamed Trump.
Overall, 85% of respondents said the economy was the biggest issue they personally faced. Other major issues influencing voters included health care, crime, gun policy, and immigration, in that order.
Democrats argued that climate change affects them more than crime or immigration. Additionally, Democratic respondents primarily argued that both illegal and legal immigration are good for the United States, with more than half saying that immigrants “contribute to economic growth” and “enrich America’s culture and values.” “By paying taxes, we contribute to government revenue.”
While 71% of Republicans say they are concerned about illegal immigrants committing crimes, only 17% of Democrats say the same.
