Majority of Americans Oppose Concessions to Russia in Peace Deal with Ukraine

A recent poll indicates that a significant number of Americans find it unacceptable to force Ukraine to give up territory to Russia or to limit its military as part of any peace agreement. Approximately 51% of U.S. respondents believe such demands, highlighted in a leaked peace proposal, would essentially hand a victory to President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing conflict, now entering its fourth year.

The survey also echoes strong international disapproval, with respondents from countries like Britain, France, Germany, and Poland expressing notable resistance to key elements of the proposed peace plan from Washington.

“People want to see an end to this unjust war and alleviate the suffering of the Ukrainian people,” stated Luke Trill, executive director of More in Common. “However, the poll’s clear indication is that many believe no deal is preferable to one that primarily benefits Russia.”

Furthermore, about 74% of those surveyed believe it’s crucial for the U.S. to support Ukraine’s sovereignty against Russian aggression, while 63% think that if Russia were to succeed in the invasion, it wouldn’t cease its endeavors in Ukraine.

Interestingly, fewer than 30% of Americans think Putin would adhere to a ceasefire agreement, with skepticism regarding this aspect growing since March.

“For individuals in the five countries we consulted, the implications of this negotiation stretch far beyond Ukraine. It’s evident that many are concerned that if Russia manages to gain territory or diminishes Ukraine’s military capabilities, it could encourage Putin and jeopardize long-term peace and stability in Europe,” Toril mentioned.
