A recent Economist/YouGov poll revealed that most Biden supporters are not supporting President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election because they admire him and his leadership, but are instead voting “against” former President Donald Trump.
In this study, Indicated Trump, who leads Biden by two points among registered voters in elections that include third-party candidates in 2024, asked Biden supporters: “Are you primarily voting for Joe Biden, or are you voting against Donald Trump?”
A majority, 51 percent, admitted they were primarily voting “against” Trump, compared with 48 percent who said they would vote “for” Biden, 81. A majority of independents who plan to vote for Biden, 70 percent, also admitted they were primarily voting “against” Trump, rather than voting “for” Biden.
The survey also asked the same question to respondents who said they were voting for Trump, and found that an overwhelming majority, 67%, were primarily voting “for” Trump. In other words, most Trump supporters are not simply voting for Trump as a protest vote against Biden. Only 32% said they were supporting Trump because they were primarily voting “against” Biden.

While a majority of independents who support Biden are voting “against” Trump, most independents who support Trump (62%) say they are primarily voting “for” the former president, while an additional 35% say they are primarily voting “against” Biden.
The survey asked respondents, “Regardless of who you support, if Joe Biden was the Democratic nominee and Donald Trump was the Republican nominee, who do you think would win the presidential election?”
Most people believe Trump will win, at 41%, while 34% say the same about Biden. Another 25% remain unsure. Notably, independents are most likely to be unsure, at 42%, but more of them believe Trump will win than Biden, 37% to 21%.
The survey was conducted among 1,595 U.S. adults from June 9 to 11, 2024. Several other polls have shown that the Manhattan jury’s guilty verdict in the controversial business records trial has not negatively affected the former president, much to the chagrin of Democrats.
