According to a new poll from the United States, most Americans expect higher prices due to President Trump’s tariff policy. Associated Press NORC Research Center.
In the survey, 76% of respondents said Trump’s customs policy was trying to “a lot” or “somewhat” increase the prices of U.S. consumer goods. 12% said they believe the tariff policy will not change the prices of consumer goods, while 11% say they will lower the prices “somewhat” or “a lot.”
On Wednesday, Trump cooled the trade war with China, calling the tariff rate he placed on the country “very high” and suggested it would lower it as part of his deal with Beijing.
“We’re dealing with a lot of countries now and we could be with China, but maybe we’ll do something special – you know, you know the deal – and we’ll see what it will turn out.
China on Thursday said it was not actively involved in the negotiation process with the US over tariffs, contradicting Trump, who said talks with Beijing are ongoing.
Trump also met with CEOs of US retailers, including Walmart and Target, earlier in the week, and the CEOs share the horrors surrounding consumers’ broken supply chains and higher prices, sources told Hill.
The president’s recent tariff lawsuits have strained relations with trading partners around the world, including allies such as the European Union and Canada.
Following the announcement of the tariffs Trump will be cleaning earlier this month, European Commission Chairman Ursula von der Leyen told fellow Europeans he knows “many of you feel disappointed in our oldest allies.”
“Let’s look clearly on immeasurable outcomes. The global economy will be very painful,” she said during the sudden tariffs in the United States.
In an AP-NORC poll, 40% say they believe that tariff policies from the president will make the number of “US jobs” “a lot” or “somewhat.” 20% said the policy would “ineffective” employment, while 38% said they thought it would reduce the number of jobs in America “somewhat” or “many.”
The AP-NORC poll was conducted from April 17 to 21, looking at 1,260 people with a margin of sampling errors for Plus or Minus 3.9% points.
