State of the Union Memories

The State of the Union address often highlights the president’s policies, but it’s the unexpected moments that tend to stick with us. Liz Wheeler, a host on Blaze TV, notes that sometimes other politicians overshadow the actual message. In her view, “Nancy Pelosi is the gold medal winner for ruining President Trump’s speech.”

A clip from Trump’s State of the Union shows Pelosi behind him, tearing up a copy of his speech while the audience applauds. “This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment act by Pelosi,” Wheeler asserts. “It was a carefully orchestrated move, knowing it would be televised globally.”

Wheeler continues, “This was her response to Trump—no real substance or counterarguments, just an act of tearing him down.” She acknowledges that it’s not just Democrats who disrupt; Republicans have had their share of outbursts too.

She recalls a moment during Barack Obama’s presidency when Congressman Joe Wilson shouted “Liar!” in response to Obama discussing Obamacare during his 2009 address. “Pelosi’s reaction in that moment was striking,” Wheeler points out, emphasizing her shocked expression.

“Wilson’s outburst earned the silver medal for best State of the Union moment,” Wheeler remarks, adding, “And then there’s Marco Rubio, who earns the bronze for his infamous water break during his rebuttal.” This, she says, was a memorable moment from 2013 when Rubio awkwardly paused to take a sip, overshadowing the president’s message entirely.
