Survey on Deportation of Illegal Immigrant
A recent investigation by Cygnal revealed that several swing voters support the deportation of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who was sent back to El Salvador under the Trump administration.
The survey offered two perspectives for respondents regarding Abrego Garcia’s deportation:
1. Abrego Garcia is an illegal immigrant involved in crime, specifically tied to the MS-13 gang, and therefore was appropriately deported to El Salvador.
2. Abrego Garcia is a family man from Maryland who should be allowed to return to the United States immediately.
Overall, 45.6% of voters in the 2026 general election view Abrego Garcia as a criminal and a deported illegal immigrant affiliated with the MS-13 gang, while 38.8% see him as a Maryland family man.
Interestingly, 43% of swing voters support the idea of explaining and deporting criminal illegal immigrants, although 31% oppose it. About 26% remain unsure. Among Republicans, 79% favor deportation, compared to 35% of independents and only 16% of Democrats. Notably, 41% of independents and a significant 67% of Democrats feel that Abrego Garcia is the “Maryland man” deserving of re-entry into the U.S.
This aligns with findings from an April survey, where a significant 87% of Democrats believed that Abrego Garcia should return to the country.
According to Breitbart News, Abrego Garcia’s deportation stemmed from a 2019 ruling against him by an immigration judge, which sought to protect him from being sent back to El Salvador. Throughout the Trump administration, ICE maintained a focus on his connections to MS-13, allegations of human trafficking, and reports of physical abuse.
On Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem challenged Democrat Dan Goldman (D-NY) to defend Abrego Garcia, stating, “It must be very discouraging for your constituents. I’m surprised you haven’t fought for them rather than for someone like this.” Noem expressed her support for the constituents, implying a contrast with Goldman’s stance.
