Latest Legal Troubles for Monica Meles
Monica Meles, a woman infamous for her incestuous relationship with her son, has found herself in legal issues once again. She’s reportedly been breaking into and vandalizing the homes of elderly women multiple times.
The 36-year-old Meles, who was charged with incest back in August 2016 for her tumultuous relationship with 19-year-old Caleb Patterson, was arrested on Sunday in Clovis, New Mexico. Authorities claim she broke into a residence, stealing kitchen countertops and light fixtures, and even caused flooding in the property and garden.
Clovis Police Lt. Roman Romero noted that during her arrest, Meles bizarrely explained her actions by saying she had “nowhere to go” and was feeling unwell due to the weather conditions, including thunder and lightning.
The homeowner, a 66-year-old woman, was away at the time, but a neighbor noticed the break-in and alerted her best friend in Texas, where she was staying.
The 66-year-old lives on a modest income of $900 a month and has experienced three break-ins within the last few months. Her friend believes Meles is behind them all. “It’s such a coincidence,” Virginia Pritchett, 69, remarked.
Pritchett recounted that the neighbor spotted the back gate wide open, recalling similar events before. “She saw a light shining and noticed them in the laundry room… They seemed to know exactly where to go,” she added.
“They had the right tools with them. According to the police, they mimicked what a handyman would do, taking out locks and screws.” Pritchett noted that after contacting the police, Meles was apprehended.
Pritchett expressed her frustration, revealing she was aware of Meles’ past, including a previous incident where she set her house and backyard on fire while under the influence of drugs. “She’s a burglar who has been in my friend’s house before,” Pritchett said. “It feels like the justice system hasn’t done nearly enough to address her actions. I’m beyond furious with her right now.”
The homeowner, who prefers to remain unnamed, has lived in her Clovis home for five years. Pritchett had plans to move in with her once she finished her stay in Texas. “When something went wrong in her life, I was there to help, and we’ve always supported one another,” Pritchett said.
However, after the break-ins, the situation has become increasingly alarming. “To be honest, I was scared, too. What if someone broke in with a weapon?” Pritchett continued. “It’s clear these individuals were watching that house.” She is actively helping her friend pursue charges against Meles.
“She really needs to be placed in a facility… I’m going to contact the district attorney to see how we can move forward,” Pritchett mentioned.
Since her arrest in 2016, Meles has had multiple encounters with law enforcement and has reportedly been homeless in Clovis in recent times. Currently, she is being held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
After pleading no contest in March 2017, Meles and her son were both found guilty of incest, receiving three years of probation and a no-contact order.
