Tragic Incident at Kansas Youth Soccer Game
A 34-year-old woman drove her pickup truck through a youth soccer game in Kansas, resulting in the deaths of two people, including a six-year-old boy, and injuring 11 others, as reported by Wichita police.
Witnesses say the woman, who is believed to be the mother of a child who plays at the complex, exclaimed, “Oh my God, Oh my God, what have I done?” while being pulled from the vehicle by concerned parents.
Authorities stated that both a 35-year-old man and the six-year-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which occurred around 3:25 p.m. during a news briefing on Saturday night.
Captain Aaron Moses from the Wichita Police Department informed the media that the victims were not related. Five children, aged between five and nine, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
In total, 11 individuals were hospitalized; ten of them sustained traumatic injuries, though none were reported as life-threatening.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan mentioned the police are still investigating the cause of the crash, which remains unclear.
The woman stayed at the crime scene and was taken into police custody during the press conference. She is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
After the truck drove through the game, bystanders quickly stepped in to provide “life-saving assistance” to the injured until emergency responders arrived, according to the chief.
The woman drove her truck from the east side of the sports complex to the soccer field located on the west end of the Stryker Sports Complex park. Although believed to have a child participating in soccer at the facility, she was not in the game at the time of the incident.
As the investigation continues, more details are expected to be released, authorities noted.
