Tragic Incident at Wichita Soccer Field

A 34-year-old mother is out of custody after her pickup truck collided with several individuals on a soccer field in Wichita, Kansas. This incident, which took place on Saturday afternoon, resulted in the deaths of a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, while also injuring ten others, according to police.

Multiple calls alerted Sedgwick County 911 about a vehicle that had entered the soccer fields at Stryker Sports Complex and struck people present there.

“What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy,” an official expressed.

The early investigation revealed that a Chevrolet pickup, driven by the mother, was initially parked before it unexpectedly drove onto a soccer field, hitting several children and adults. Notably, two juveniles—her children—were in the truck at the time, while another of her children played soccer on a different field within the complex.

Tragically, despite the best efforts of emergency responders, both victims succumbed to their injuries on-site. The deceased were identified as 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both hailing from McPherson, Kansas. Authorities clarified that the two did not share a family relationship.

The ten individuals injured were transported to hospitals with injuries classified as noncritical. Additionally, a 61-year-old woman was admitted due to medical complications that were not related to the incident, bringing the total number taken to hospitals to eleven.

The injured individuals include:

  • A 5-year-old girl
  • A 5-year-old boy
  • Two 8-year-old boys
  • A 9-year-old girl
  • A 28-year-old woman
  • A 32-year-old man
  • A 59-year-old woman
  • A 65-year-old woman
  • A 68-year-old man

Investigators conducted interviews with over 30 witnesses, including the juveniles in the truck, before questioning the driver. After gathering testimonies, they consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. As a result, the driver was released pending toxicology tests and a mechanical inspection of the truck.

No charges have been filed yet, and authorities are still working to piece together the events that led to this unfortunate collision.

At a news conference, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses mentioned that the driver had a valid license with no active arrest warrants and was cooperating fully with the investigation.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed heartfelt condolences to the families impacted by the incident, emphasizing the deep sorrow felt throughout the community. “We are also thinking about those who were injured, their loved ones, and everyone who witnessed what happened,” he added. “This tragedy has touched many lives, and we want families to know they are not alone.”
