Tragic Death of New York Mother in Ireland
A New York mother, who moved to Ireland with her teenage daughter, was found dead in her home, sparking a police investigation for a “person of interest” she was acquainted with.
Jamie Carney, 43, originally from Westchester County, was discovered in a rented residence in Killarney, with significant head injuries, after being reported covered in bed sheets. This incident was highlighted by local news sources.
Carney, along with her daughter who had just relocated to Killarney in September, was pronounced dead shortly after 1 PM. The local Irish National Police, known as Gardai, confirmed this information.
Police were alerted when Carney’s 13-year-old daughter found her mother unresponsive in bed and reached out to a friend for assistance.
The scene was reportedly chaotic, with evidence of struggle, including blood splatter in the room, and it appeared that someone had attempted to cover Carney’s injuries before fleeing the scene.
The crime scene was secured for examination, and her body was subsequently moved to Kerry University Hospital for an autopsy on Wednesday morning.
While the autopsy findings remain undisclosed, authorities have shifted the case to homicide, indicating a serious nature to the crime. Following this development, ports and airports in Ireland were placed on high alert over concerns that the suspect might attempt to escape to Northern Ireland or the UK.
The unidentified “person of interest” is described as a Middle Eastern man, aged between 20 and 30, who had sought asylum and had previously lived in France and Turkey. He had been residing in Killarney for over a year. Notably, the man and Carney were believed to be acquaintances and had last interacted just days before the incident.
Witnesses reported hearing a heated argument between a man and a woman in the locale on Monday afternoon, which is being scrutinized by investigators as they consider whether jealousy may have been a motive for the crime.
Efforts to locate the person of interest have been challenging, as he allegedly lacks a permanent residence connected to his asylum status. Authorities are examining his travel history and connections in France and Turkey.
Before her move to Ireland, Carney worked as a real estate and insurance agent in New Jersey. She relocated with her daughter in 2021 after falling in love with the country during a vacation. At the time of her death, she was employed locally as an RX coordinator.
Carney was known in the community as a dedicated mother, actively participating in her daughter’s sports and well-regarded for her involvement in local affairs.
One local politician, Martin Grady, shared his memories, describing Carney as joyful and caring, a staple in the community landscape.
Reports suggest Carney met the alleged assailant during an anti-war gathering some months prior.
The town was enjoying a festive atmosphere when the news of her tragic death broke, casting a shadow over the community. Mayor John O’Donoghue remarked that the feeling quickly shifted to one of sorrow and disbelief.
Jamie Carney leaves behind her daughter, as well as her mother and sister, who continue to reside in New York. Her father had passed away less than a year prior to her own death.
