Mother of Minneapolis church shooter refuses to assist investigators

Minneapolis School Shooting Investigation Update

The mother of the shooter involved in the recent Catholic school shooting in Minneapolis has not cooperated with investigators as they seek to understand the tragic incident, which has left two children dead and 18 others injured.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that numerous interviews have been carried out with the shooter’s friends, relatives, and witnesses. “We know we haven’t been able to talk to the shooter’s mother, but we’re continuing efforts to reach her,” he explained during a press conference on Thursday.

Court documents reveal that Mary Grace Westman, the shooter’s mother, had applied for a legal name change for her son, indicating in 2019 that “minor identifies as a woman and hopes that her name reflects that identification.”

Interestingly, there remains uncertainty about why she isn’t cooperating with the investigation. When a reporter inquired about whether authorities had contacted the shooter’s father, Chief O’Hara was initially unable to confirm that information but later mentioned having a brief chat with Drew Evans, director of the Minnesota Criminal Arrest Bureau.

Details about the shooter’s current living situation are also unclear. O’Hara remarked, “We can’t check the residence where he was staying now, but that’s certainly part of the ongoing investigation.” It has been noted that the shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, attended church services at a school connected to the church.

O’Hara commented on the connection, noting that the shooter’s mother previously worked as a parish employee. The situation feels just…well, complicated, right?

In the morning around 8:30, the suspect opened fire in the church, shattering stained glass windows and sending students and parishioners scrambling for safety. Authorities are still working to determine a motive behind the attack, although they have discovered a manifesto linked to the shooter, which was initially released on YouTube before being taken down.

FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned that their investigation suggests the shooting could be classified as domestic terrorism, motivated by a hateful ideology. He pointed out that the manifesto contained anti-Catholic sentiments and mentioned violent ideas directed at Jewish individuals, including inflammatory phrases like “Israel must fall” and “Free Palestine.”

This incident raises many unsettling questions, and it’s still tough to process what happened. The community is reeling, and the road to understanding might take a while.
