Rep. Seth Moulton Discusses Transgender Issues on CNN

During an appearance on CNN’s “The Source,” U.S. Senate candidate and Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) addressed his previous criticisms on the involvement of biological men in women’s sports. He emphasized the need to take proactive steps by asking, “Where’s our legislation to enshrine protections into law so that they actually can be confident that they will have the healthcare that they need?” Moulton criticized the push from the previous administration to undermine these rights and suggested that Democrats needed to be more proactive in creating legislation that protects individuals from discrimination based on their identity or expression.

Guest host Boris Sanchez showed a clip of Moulton suggesting that biological men “should” participate in women’s sports, adding that there should be discussions regarding fairness and safety.

Sanchez queried, “What does that look like?”

Moulton replied, expressing frustration over the Democratic Party’s hesitance to engage in debates on contentious issues, which he feels has become a common trend in Washington. He remarked that many Democrats are often more focused on not upsetting anyone rather than tackling real problems. He pointed out that, unfortunately, much of the legislation concerning the transgender community has been negative and proposed by Republicans, all of which he has opposed. He highlighted his strong voting record on LGBTQ rights and his support for transgender servicemembers, as well as the success of his national mental health hotline for LGBTQ youth. The crux of his message is clear: it’s time for Democrats to lead on these issues rather than merely reacting to Republican initiatives.

Moulton further commented on additional issues like immigration, stating that Republicans are exploiting the situation, and criticized Democrats for not achieving immigration reform while they were in power. He believes that effective leadership means addressing and resolving these matters for the benefit of citizens.

Sanchez then referenced a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicating that 67% of Americans support banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, asking Moulton if he thought Democrats were disconnected from public sentiment on this issue.

Moulton responded by reiterating his belief that the party struggles with engaging in open discussions about complex topics. He argued that dismissing dissenting opinions creates a barrier to meaningful dialogue. Moulton, a proponent of transgender rights, insisted that Democratic leadership should step up on this and other pressing issues. He pointed out that avoiding these conversations ultimately harms the very individuals the party aims to protect, suggesting that genuine leadership requires the courage to confront difficult discussions, rather than sidestepping them.
