Rangers broadcaster John Giannone announced Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Giannone, who is a studio host and reporter for MSG Networks' Rangers broadcasts, announced his diagnosis during the pregame show ahead of Tuesday's game against the Stars, which is Hockey Fight Cancer Night at Madison Square Garden. revealed.
“One month ago today, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer,” he revealed on air. “It was after a routine annual check-up, more blood tests, an MRI, and finally a biopsy that made the diagnosis.”
The broadcaster described his prognosis as “excellent” and said treatment to fight the cancer had already begun.
Giannone has worked at MSG Networks since 2002 as a studio host and reporter, and also served as play-by-play for Sam Rosen, the voice of Rangers TV.

The veteran broadcaster said the support he received from family, friends and colleagues after his diagnosis was “overwhelming”.
Giannone also gave a special shout out to fellow broadcaster and former NHL goaltender Steve Valiquette for his support.
“Steve really picked up the ball and was there from the first moment to help advocate for prompt treatment,” he said. “Stephen has made all the difference in the world for me, and I will be forever grateful, and that's what tonight is all about.”
Vacquette, who also appeared on Tuesday's broadcast, said he would “run through any wall” for Giannone.
Before moving into broadcasting, Giannone worked as a sportswriter. That includes nearly six years at the Post, covering the Islanders, Jets and Giants, as well as other assignments.
Tuesday's Hockey Fight Cancer Night is part of the NHL's annual effort to show support for cancer patients and their families.
