MSNBC Hosts Urge Jay Jones to Withdraw from Virginia AG Race Due to Harassing Messages

MSNBC Host “Morning Joe” Discusses Controversial Text from Democrat Attorney General Jay Jones

Democrat Attorney General Jay Jones has come under fire for a text he reportedly sent, which was shared by Republican lawmakers. The message expresses a wish for harm, which has raised significant eyebrows.

The National Review published the message in which Jones addressed Virginia House Delegate Carrie Coiner (R) in 2022, even suggesting violence toward House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R).

Gilbert, in response to comments regarding historical figures like Adolf Hitler and Pol Pot, had stated that such individuals deserve “two bullets in the head.” Jones followed up with, “Because it only moves policy when you feel pain personally.”

Jones later issued an apology, stating he had taken “full responsibility” for the text but maintained his aspiration to become the next state attorney general.

On “Morning Joe,” co-host Mika Brzezinski introduced upcoming discussions surrounding this incident.

Amid the backlash, the Republican Prosecutors Association (RAGA) noted on X, “When you lose MSNBC, you know it’s serious.”

In a segment on the matter, Brzezinski, along with Jonathan Remair and John Heileman, unanimously condemned Jones’ remarks as over the line.

Brzezinski described the text exchanges as troubling, remarking that she “didn’t want to read it aloud.” Lemia, also weighing in, called the messages “deep” and “intrusive,” emphasizing that such sentiments were swiftly condemned by others across the aisle. There was speculation about the impact on Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger’s campaign, as she quickly denounced the statements.

Lemia voiced concerns about the potential repercussions for Jones, suggesting he might begin to recognize the need to step back, noting that even members of his own party found the rhetoric concerning. “You can’t, especially now, ignore the issues of violent rhetoric and political violence,” she asserted.

Brzezinski expressed disbelief, asking rhetorically, “Who’s going to say that!?” while Lemia agreed, stating that the situation was indeed beyond acceptable boundaries. Heilemann added that the text from 2022 remains “very inappropriate today, tomorrow, ten years ago, six months ago.”

He continued, indicating that there is pressure for Spanberger and that the party might insist that Jones reconsider his candidacy. “That seems right. You wouldn’t want to jeopardize things further in this political climate,” he concluded.
