MSNBC Spreads Hoax Misquoting Vance’s Comments on School Shootings

MSNBC is one of the latest media outlets to completely misrepresent comments made by Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) about the horrific school shooting at Apalachee High School, falsely claiming that Senator Vance callously dismisses school shootings as a “fact of life.”

“The comments that he made right there are a very stark example of the difference between the two campaigns: Harris-Waltz versus Trump-Vance. They take Trump-Vance as a reality,” MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski argued.

“And Kamala Harris said right after the shootings that this is a choice we made and we have to make a different choice. People don't want this to be a reality of life,” she reiterated.

But Brzezinski's framing is completely wrong: In fact, Vance has made it clear that he doesn't like school shootings being “everyday occurrences” and has called for increased security.

“If these psychopaths are going to target our children, we have to be prepared for that,” Vance said. “You don't have to like the reality we live in, but it's the reality we live in, and we have to deal with it.”

Additionally, Vance said “enhanced security” at schools is important.

“I hate that this is real,” Vance said, “but if you're a psychopath and you want to make headlines, you realize that schools are an ideal target. We need to beef up security in our schools, because if a psychopath wants to walk in through the front door and kill kids, he can't do it.”

Notably, an armed School Resource Officer stopped the shooter before he could cause further carnage.

MSNBC wasn't the only network to misrepresent Vance's comments: The Associated Press also took them out of context, as did Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.).

The AP later acknowledged the error and changed the headline to “J.D. Vance laments school shootings as 'everyday occurrence' and calls for better security,” adding that “this post replaces an earlier post which was removed to add context to a partial quote from Vance.”

Vance also hit back at Harris, reminding Americans that “Rather than protecting our kids, she's trying to make our schools safer.”

“Instead of pointing out her own failures, she is lying about what I said,” he said. “Further despair in the greatest fraud in American politics.”
