Trump’s Remarks on Chinese Students Draw Mixed Reactions

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s recent announcement regarding the acceptance of 600,000 Chinese students into U.S. universities. She voiced her concerns by stating, “We should not invite 600,000 Chinese students to American universities that may be loyal to the CCP.” Her comments came shortly after Trump’s remarks made during a press event at the White House on Monday.

In the 2023/2024 academic year, the number of international students from China attending U.S. institutions was reported to be 277,398. During his address, Trump highlighted the importance of these students, saying, “We allow students to come. It’s very important, 600,000 students. But we’re going to get along with China.”

On the same day, Fox News Channel’s Laura Ingraham questioned Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about the implications of Trump’s statement, inquiring how the administration would prioritize these students from a nation with a communist government. Lutnick mentioned that Trump’s perspective was that a lack of Chinese students might harm educational institutions, suggesting that better schools would attract top talent while weaker ones might struggle.

Greene, however, expressed a different viewpoint. She suggested that if schools depend on Chinese students and can’t function without them, perhaps they shouldn’t be in operation at all, as they might be overly influenced by the Chinese Communist Party.

“Why are we allowing 600,000 students from China to replace the opportunities for American students? We should never allow that,” Greene elaborated. She also pointed out the need for more graduates from trade schools, describing them as crucial for providing skills relevant to America’s job market with competitive starting wages.

The White House was approached for a comment regarding Greene’s statements but had not responded by Tuesday morning.

Earlier this year, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized a shift in visa policies, indicating that the U.S. would work to revoke visas for certain Chinese students under the Trump administration. Greene’s remarks seem to echo a growing concern among some lawmakers regarding foreign students’ impact on American education and job opportunities.
