Several people were hospitalized after a massive motor vehicle crash involving at least 25 vehicles on a major Maryland highway Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on the westbound Chesapeake Bay Bridge, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). The double span bridge over the Chesapeake Bay connects the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas with the Eastern Shore region of Maryland and Delta.beWare and Virginia.
Fox 5 reports the multi-vehicle crash occurred in heavy fog, with bridges closed and long delays expected in Annapolis and Kent Island.

Aerial footage showed several tractor-trailers, pickup trucks, cars and SUVs crashing into the scene. A truck carrying a trailer of liquid tanks also appeared to have pushed the sedan against the rails.

Photos released by MDTA show traffic jammed near the bridge and emergency vehicles at the scene.
It was not immediately clear how many people were injured or the severity of their injuries. It is unclear what caused the initial collision or whether fog played a role.

Drivers are being urged to delay crossing the bridge, Fox 5 reports. Eastbound and westbound traffic alternate on the eastbound span. Officials said service in both directions was prohibited due to fog and limited visibility.
According to Fox 5, motorists are asked to stay on US 50 on both sides of the bridge to keep local roads open for first responders and residents.
