Murder of Paddleboarder in Maine Raises Concerns
A paddleboarder was tragically found murdered in a small town in Maine, leaving authorities seeking answers.
The body of Sunshine Stewart was discovered under “unusual circumstances” at Crawford Pond in Union Community around 1 a.m. on July 3rd, according to reports.
Crawford Pond, described as a 100-acre island, can only be accessed by boat, which adds to the intrigue surrounding the case.
Despite determining that the 48-year-old’s death was a homicide, no suspects have been named more than a week later, and the search for the perpetrator continues.
In a statement, Maine Police acknowledged the unease this incident has caused within the Union and Crawford Pond communities, expressing their commitment to investigating the death. They encouraged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.
Stewart, an experienced paddleboarder and outdoor enthusiast, set out for Crawford Pond near Mike Mac Campground on July 2nd. When she failed to return after six hours, her absence prompted a missing person report.
Search efforts led to her discovery on the island, assisted by game wardens following a multi-agency collaboration.
Authorities are working closely with the owners of Mic Mac Campground to investigate and gain access to the crime scene, although it isn’t part of the campground property.
Investigators are following leads from a hotline and are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who might have observed Stewart paddleboarding at Crawford Pond between 6 and 9 p.m. on July 2nd.
The Major Crime Unit is evaluating all tips as part of the ongoing investigation.
Stewart had an adventurous spirit; she was a contractor, former marine biologist, and even sailed to the Caribbean in her past. Her sister, Kim Ware, remembered her as a generous and strong individual.
“Captain Sunny was a fantastic person,” Ware stated. “She would give the shirt off her back to anyone. The strongest person I know!”
Sunny cherished the outdoors, engaging in activities like hiking, boating, paddleboarding, and yoga. “Getting to know her was a true blessing! She was my sister and my best friend,” Ware added.
Union, with a population of around 2,500, is located about 30 miles east of Augusta, Maine’s capital.
