Murder trial of Karen Read progresses with crash expert testimony on the 29th day

Murder Trial of Karen Reed Continues

The ongoing murder trial of Karen Reed has entered its 29th day, and her defense is getting ready to wrap up this week. Reed faces allegations of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, following an incident where he was struck by her Lexus SUV during a heavy snowstorm on January 29, 2022.

Before the judges arrived, Judge Beverly Canone addressed matters concerning rebuttal testimony and began to limit expert witnesses. She indicated that further hearings would be necessary to decide on the qualifications of Dr. Elizabeth Laposata, a forensic pathologist from Brown University, to testify.

David Jannetti, one of Reed’s defense attorneys, argued in court that O’Keefe had been “placed” on the ground near where he was found, specifically outside a residence in Canton, Massachusetts, which is about 20 miles south of Boston. O’Keefe and others had gathered there for an after party the night before the tragic event.

Dr. Daniel Wolfe, an accident reconstruction expert, testified last week, claiming that the damage to Reed’s vehicle did not align with the prosecution’s narrative regarding the impact that led to O’Keefe’s injuries. During his cross-examination, Wolfe admitted the possibility that pieces of the taillight could have caused injuries to O’Keefe’s face and nose prior to his skull fracture, contradicting parts of the prosecutor’s case.

Reed is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder and other charges related to leaving the scene of an incident involving a drunk driving death. Meanwhile, her defense asserts that her vehicle did not hit O’Keefe, suggesting instead that his injuries stemmed from other circumstances after she departed.

If convicted, Reed could face a life sentence, a reality that looms large, as the judge previously encountered the same charges during Reed’s initial trial last year.
