Jack Antonoff Critiques AI Art in Recent Instagram Post
Grammy-winning producer and singer Jack Antonoff has taken a strong stance against artists who use artificial intelligence (AI) in their work, referring to them as “godless whores.” The frontman of Bleachers, who frequently collaborates with Taylor Swift, made his feelings clear in an Instagram post ahead of his band’s album release, 10 minutes together.
In this post, Antonoff expressed a range of thoughts on the subject, emphasizing the importance of the traditional artistic process. He claimed that creating art is an “ancient ritual,” arguing that music production lacks value if it doesn’t involve genuine effort and collaboration. “What we are doing has become an ancient ritual,” he stated, lamenting the easier approaches available today.
He added that the rush toward optimization misses the essence of what drives true artistry. “We (myself, the band, and frankly everyone I know) never wanted this work to get faster or easier,” Antonoff noted. He emphasized that the randomness and magic inherent in the creative process are what make it worthwhile.
Antonoff’s comments included a pointed message to those who cheer for new methods of creating art. “So to everyone who’s excited about new ways to disguise art, please drive off that cliff,” he proclaimed, expressing his deep commitment to the traditional aspects of music-making.
He further elaborated that future generations would continue to engage in music creation as an ancient ritual, despite some artists opting for shortcuts. “We remain more dedicated than ever to uncovering what comes from within,” Antonoff stated.
Calling the idea of optimizing this sacred process embarrassing, he cheekily added, “You godless whore.” Antonoff found it amusing that many are vocal about their concerns regarding the future of the industry, noting that new artists he knows are disinterested in anything that doesn’t come from their inner selves.
Besides leading Bleachers, Antonoff has collaborated with notable artists such as Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey, and has maintained a consistent critique of AI’s implications for art. He voiced skepticism about AI’s impact on artistry, suggesting it hinders rather than enhances. “Being in front of something man-made is a big part of sauce,” he remarked, although he expressed concern that AI could harm struggling musicians.
Furthermore, Antonoff highlighted the challenges artists face in today’s environment, lamenting that the very artists navigating this landscape often bear the brunt of its difficulties. “It’s exhausting and sad that the worst part of that journey is the artists themselves,” he concluded, encapsulating his complex feelings regarding the evolving music industry.
