Musk raises $6 billion for xAI to challenge OpenAI

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has raised $6 billion from a group of investors to fund the expansion of its technology.

The company website The company announced on Sunday that the “Series B funding” will be used to bring its first product to market, build out its infrastructure, and research future technologies.

“xAI will continue this trajectory of rapid progress over the coming months with multiple exciting technology updates and products to announce soon,” the company wrote.

Investors in this funding round include Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal and Kingdom Holding, among others.

The investor funding will help Musk compete with other companies in the artificial intelligence race alongside companies like Microsoft and OpenAI, which developed the popular ChatGPT platform.

Musk announced in July that he was starting an artificial intelligence company with the goal of understanding “the true nature of the universe.”

As Musk continues to race towards artificial intelligence, he has been a pioneer in expressing caution about the emerging technology.

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) said in July that he believes Musk is the most prominent “AI pauser,” or person concerned about the risks that AI poses to humanity.

In March, Musk said xAI’s chatbot, “Grok,” would be available to all X premium subscribers.

The company said in a statement Sunday that model capabilities have “rapidly improved” and that the new version of Grok “opens the door to advancements.”
