Musk spent at least $250M to help elect Trump, filings show

Tech billionaire Elon Musk spent at least $250 million to return President-elect Trump to the White House, according to a new report filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

During the 2024 election period, Tesla and SpaceX executives made in-kind contributions to America PAC, the super PAC that supported President Trump's bid for the Oval Office, according to an FEC report filed Thursday night. and donated approximately $239 million, including

That includes three $25 million donations in the last two weeks of October, records show.

The outside group, which registered with the FEC in late May, spent millions on vote-getting efforts, direct mail, digital advertising, and promotional efforts. The super PAC ran a controversial campaign that made $1 million in donations to Trump supporters in seven battleground states who signed the petition. The initiative has come under scrutiny both publicly and in court, with Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner suing the PAC in October to halt the giveaway.

In total, Musk spent more than $40 million on checks, with each $1 million donor listed as a payment to America PAC's “public relations consultant,” according to FEC filings. That's what it means.

While most of Mr. Musk's public donations went to the America PAC, the SpaceX CEO also funded another super PAC that sought to soften Mr. Trump's stance on abortion.

RBG PAC, which was registered with the FEC on Oct. 16, did not reveal its donors until the 2024 general election. But the latest filings reveal that Musk is the sole funder, donating $20.5 million on October 24 through the Austin, Texas-based Elon Musk Revocable Trust.

The outside group, named after the late liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, suggested that Mr. Trump and the late justice appeared to agree to oppose a nationwide abortion ban. The group's site includes President Trump's Oct. 1 post on X, in which he vowed to veto a national abortion ban if it went his way.

“Why did Ruth Bader Ginsburg agree with Donald Trump's position on abortion? Because RBG believed that the federal government should not dictate abortion laws. “We do not support the ban,” the group said in a statement. Website.

Outside groups were conducting activities focused on abortion. advertisement The company then spent that money on text messages, mailers and digital advertising, the FEC report found.

The tech mogul also supported the Super PAC MAHA Alliance, which stands for “Make America Healthy Again” and is tied to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The group received $3 million from Mr. Musk on October 22, according to FEC filings. Outside groups tried to persuade Kennedy supporters to vote for Trump after an independent presidential candidate withdrew from the race.

As more FEC reports are filed by super PACs and other politically active groups, it is possible that Mr. Musk has given even more money to activities supporting Mr. Trump.

Mr. Musk was one of Mr. Trump's biggest donors in this year's election cycle, according to FEC filings.

After the election, Musk made frequent appearances at Mar-a-Lago, participating in meetings between President Trump and world leaders, and sometimes weighing in on the next president's choices of nominees and appointees.

Immediately after Trump's victory over Vice President Harris, he and his 2024 primary Republican rival Vivek Ramaswamy joined the Department of Government Efficiency, a new advisory committee focused on cutting government spending. Musk was appointed as head of DOGE.
