Post-Election Remarks from Incoming NYC Mayor Zoran Mamdani
Zoran Mamdani, the soon-to-be mayor of New York City and a Muslim socialist, made an inaccurate statement during a post-election interview, claiming that it was President Donald Trump who cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits amid the government shutdown, rather than Democrats.
During the interview, George Stephanopoulos confronted Mamdani about his assertion, pointing out that Trump seemed to be watching him closely, suggesting that the President and other Republicans were positioning him as a representative of the Democratic Party.
He then asked Mamdani how he felt about House Speaker Mike Johnson’s labeling of him as an “extremist” and “Marxist,” with a prediction that all Democratic incumbents and candidates would be tied to Mamdani’s alleged failures during the upcoming midterm elections in 2026.
Mamdani responded by emphasizing his commitment to showcasing what it means to address the struggles of everyday working people in New York City. He differentiated himself from Trump, asserting that the former president had campaigned on lowering grocery prices but was now making it increasingly difficult for Americans to afford food by cutting SNAP benefits.
However, this claim holds inaccuracies. SNAP benefits were not disbursed as Congressional Democrats have repeatedly declined to pass a clean continuing resolution (CR) to reopen the government, despite previously supporting similar measures. The US Department of Agriculture outlines the reasons for the lack of SNAP benefits on its website, which displays a significant alert.
It’s noted that Senate Democrats have voted against measures to reopen the government 14 times. This not only impacts SNAP but also affects various agricultural programs, food inspections, and protections related to animal and plant diseases. Critics argue that Senate Democrats are withholding essential services from Americans in pursuit of other agendas, including medical treatments for undocumented immigrants.
Furthermore, while grappling with these issues, Democrats are seeking $1.5 trillion in new spending, which encompasses funding for various initiatives abroad, including those promoting LGBTQ+ awareness in regions like the Horn of Africa.
In the meantime, the Trump administration is anticipated to issue partial food stamp benefits as Democrats continue to resist efforts to reopen the government.
