A group calling itself “Muslim Women for Harris-Waltz” announced it was disbanding on Wednesday following the refusal of Palestinian-Americans to speak at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

“Given this new information from the Uncommitted Movement – that VP Harris’ team declined a request to chair the Palestinian-American cause at the Democratic National Convention – we can no longer in good conscience continue to support the Muslim Women’s Movement for Harris-Waltz,” the group said in a Twitter post.
The group’s dissolution comes after a group of undecided Democratic delegates asked Michigan delegate Abbas Alawiyeh to take the speaker’s seat at the Democratic National Convention.
Additionally, families of Israeli hostages in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip were given the opportunity to speak at the event.
Nevertheless, a request to invite a Palestinian-American to speak at the event was still denied, leading to a sit-in protest by some undecided delegates and their supporters outside Chicago’s United Center, the site of the Democratic National Convention.
“The families of the Israeli hostages on stage tonight have shown more empathy for Palestinian Americans and Palestinians than our candidates or the Democratic National Committee,” the statement continued. “This is a terrible message to send to the Democratic Party. Palestinians have a right to speak out about Palestine.”
Meanwhile, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Cori Bush (D-Missouri) have met with pro-Palestinian protesters to voice their support, and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) went a step further, joining them outside the protest.
moreover, The Hill Palestinian-American media Rep. Luwa Roman (D-Ga.) similarly expressed disappointment that event organizers did not allow Palestinian-Americans to speak on stage.
“There was a silver lining. Community members just wanted to make sure they were being seen. It’s something I’ve been warning about for a while,” she said. “This group was the start of something great, and it’s fizzled out.”
The Palestinian-American speaker’s request came in the wake of Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel and nearly a year of war in Gaza.NumberAs a result, more than 1,200 Israelis died.
