Mysterious swirling light seen over NYC and Long Island causes panic and confusion – here’s what it turned out to be

Strange Light Over NYC Linked to Rocket Launch

A peculiar swirling light seen in New York City and Long Island has been attributed to a rocket launch over 3,000 miles away, as per various reports and official statements.

On Tuesday, the European Space Agency successfully launched a weather monitoring satellite aboard an Ariane 6 heavy lift rocket from its spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, just after 6 PM local time.

Numerous videos captured by bewildered onlookers displayed an S-shaped, hazy white light illuminating the skyline of New York City and the surrounding areas of Long Island.

Some social media users expressed their confusion. One user remarked, “What was that object flying over New York tonight? Initially, I thought it was a SpaceX rocket; it moved left to right from Hunters Point in Long Island City,” sharing footage of the mysterious lights.

Several viewers even reported similar sightings across Philadelphia, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Cape Cod, as noted in social media posts.

The Sentinel 1D satellite, measuring over 196 feet in length, was observed in the second stage of its launch burnout over New York.

As for the strange light, meteorologist Mike Wankum explained, “What happens is they travel through the upper atmosphere and release excess fuel. When that fuel reaches the upper atmosphere, it freezes, leading to the formation of ice crystals and creating a swirling effect.”

The satellite marks the fourth launched by the European Space Agency, aimed at assisting disaster response teams, climate scientists, and government agencies. The data collected will reportedly be beneficial for maritime authorities needing timely weather updates.
