At a news conference on crime Wednesday at NYPD headquarters, Adams, R-New York, said crime on the city’s transit system decreased by 24% in March.
“We’re down. We were down 24% in March,” Adams said. “February is over. Can you please stop saying we’re committing crimes on the subway? We’re not.”
In the Big Apple, overall crime decreased in the first few months of 2024, and by the end of 2023, overall crime was down 0.3%. new york post Those numbers are premature.
Major crime has continued to rise under the Adams administration, largely due to the nearly 28,000 reported assaults in history, according to NYPD data obtained by the newspaper.
Back in January, the NYPD sent 1,000 uniformed officers to patrol in and around subways to help New Yorkers feel safe. In early March, Gov. Cathy Hochul (D.N.Y.) announced that approximately 1,000 members of the New York State Police, MTA Police, and MTA National Guard would be deployed to conduct baggage checks.
Meanwhile, Adams insisted the city’s crime-ridden subway system is the safest it has been since he first took office in January 2022.
“New Yorkers are safe on the subway,” Adams said. “I’m there talking and communicating with the passengers. And many of them keep saying over and over again while we’re traveling on the subway, they’re my I say, “Eric, can people stop saying this is dangerous?” This is the best subway system on the planet. ”
Last Monday, a man died after being thrown in front of an oncoming train in East Harlem. Three people were also stabbed in various attacks around the transit station.
The next day, at the same Harlem station, a female NYPD officer was punched in the face and suffered a broken nose when she stopped a person who was trying to evade a fare.
The mayor continues to deny that the city is out of control and says these random violent attacks perpetuate that image.
“This is the safest big city in America, and our numbers reflect that. And our police actions continue to reflect that,” Adams said.
