Pelosi Responds to Swalwell’s Resignation Amid Allegations
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while attending a legislative conference, commented on the allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell, stating she was unaware of any misconduct. This came as Swalwell announced he would be stepping down from Congress and halting his gubernatorial campaign.
When questioned about whether Democrats were ignoring the accusations against Swalwell, Pelosi firmly denied it. She insisted, “No, that’s not true,” emphasizing that it wasn’t the case despite rumors suggesting otherwise.
Further probed on her knowledge regarding the allegations, Pelosi reiterated her lack of awareness, saying, “There was nothing. There was nothing. I had nothing.”
Pelosi also characterized Swalwell’s decision to resign as “the right thing to do,” highlighting the importance of addressing such issues without being in public office. She remarked, “If there’s an issue that needs to be addressed, it’s best to address it not as a candidate for governor or as a member of Congress.”
Swalwell’s decision to resign was communicated on Monday following his cancellation of his gubernatorial bid. In his statement, he noted the pressure from efforts to expel him from Congress but argued it was inappropriate to do so without due process shortly after accusations were made. He added that he would focus on supporting his staff and the constituents of his district during his absence.
As the situation unfolded, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna threatened to pursue the resolution for Swalwell’s expulsion if he did not resign by a specific deadline, though her statement provided little detail.
The backdrop to Swalwell’s resignation involves multiple women coming forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Initial reports from a former employee detailed incidents of inappropriate behavior, claiming Swalwell made unwanted advances and engaged in alarming conduct.
