Maine Democrats to Host Nominating Convention Following Allegations Against Senate Candidate
The Maine Democratic Party is getting ready for a “nominating convention” to find a replacement for Graham Platner, who recently suspended his Senate campaign due to scandal. Platner was accused of raping a woman, which he firmly denies, attributing his political downfall to the “political system.”
In a video shared on social media, Platner stated, “As many of you know, in the last few days, I have faced some very serious allegations. Let me be clear: This is all false. Nothing that is being alleged actually happened. It is not true.”
He went on to express his belief that the “corporate media” and “political establishment” acted unfairly, leading to his exit from the race.
This situation has sparked some tension between Platner’s campaign team and the Maine Democratic Party, with Platner’s camp claiming that voters have been overlooked. In contrast, the party accused his team of being unclear about the nomination process for his successor.
Recently, the Maine Democratic Party released an update on the search for a new candidate, announcing a meeting with over 100 state commissioners who voted to proceed with a nominating convention. This is contingent upon the seat being vacant as of Wednesday evening.
The party emphasized that they would provide a comprehensive timeline, details about the nomination process, and how individuals can participate. They also highlighted their commitment to transparency throughout this procedure, while encouraging Platner’s supporters to remain engaged.
“There is an unprecedented amount of energy and enthusiasm among the Maine Democratic Party, driven in part by the many dedicated volunteers and supporters inspired by Graham Platner’s campaign,” the party noted. They expressed their aim to unite efforts in defeating Susan Collins in the upcoming November elections and rallying support around a new candidate.
It’s still uncertain who might be in the running for candidacy. However, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) is reportedly endorsing former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, who has some controversy of his own. Jackson has been accused of striking a female colleague with a bottle during a disagreement.
The left-wing group Progressive Victory provided details on this incident, claiming, “Several years ago, then-Maine Senate President Troy Jackson struck a female colleague with a thrown bottle during a heated disagreement during a state Senate caucus meeting.” They noted that many witnessed the event, suggesting it might not be an isolated occurrence within Maine politics. The group plans to share further updates as more information becomes available.
