Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is pushing an alternative reality.
The former House speaker asserted Wednesday that Vice President Kamala Harris “won” an “open primary” and became the Democratic presidential nominee.
For a party that loudly proclaims itself to be democratic, Harris was promoted without any public opposition through a secret process. There was nothing “public” about it.
“We had an open primary and she won. No one else was in the race because she was politically astute, that was her idea,” Pelosi said.
“Anyone could have jumped in. Some people were prepared, but she jumped right in. And it was actually a blessing and it saved us time because there wasn't that much time until the election,” Pelosi continued. “It's not that there wasn't an open process. It's just that because she was starting out, nobody was able to jump in.”
Unfortunately, the reporter Pelosi was speaking to, Kadia Goba of Semaphore, refused to refute her claims. Instead, the reporter asked about January 6th.
Pelosi's explanation is at best revisionist history, and at worst a complete lie.
The Democratic Party do not have There was an open primary election to choose President Joe Biden's successor, but Harris did not win. Single Vote in the Democratic Presidential Primary.
Moreover, it's probably going too far to describe any of this year's Democratic processes, whether the primaries or the vote to replace Joe Biden, as “open.”
In fact, Democrats fought to keep all Democrats other than Joe Biden off the primary ballot – in many states where Biden was virtually unbeatable, such as North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alaska, New Hampshire, Indiana, Montana, Delaware and Florida – and in those states, Democrats used legal technicalities to deny voters more choice.
Meanwhile, after weeks of pressure following Biden's dismal debate performances, when Pelosi and other Democratic leaders finally appeared to remove Biden from the race in mid-July, Democrats, donors and party delegates quickly switched their support to Harris, effectively blocking the possibility of an early, open primary.
It's not clear why other leading candidates, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, have quickly aligned themselves with Harris.
All Americans know is that after the June 27 debate between Biden and Donald Trump, there was a powerful behind-the-scenes movement within the Democratic Party to oust Biden, followed by a furious push to solidify the party's support for Harris.
For a party that loudly proclaims its democracy, Harris was promoted without any public opposition through a secret process. There was nothing “public” about it.
