Nassau County crime plunges 25% to kick off 2025, new data shows

New data from the Nassau County Police Department shows a significant decline in crime to launch 2025.

Records show that major crimes in Nassau County fell by more than 25% in the first two months of 2025. This is a dramatic year-over-year improvement that says law enforcement reflects ongoing efforts to keep communities safe.

The division tracking seven major crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, felony attack, robbery, grand larceny and grand larceny cars has reported a total of 710 major crimes so far this year, compared to 951 in the same period in 2024.

“Nassau County is America's safest county thanks to the men and women of the police department, corrections officers, probation officers and my pointless approach to law and order,” said county executive Bruce Blakeman.

For the second year in a row, the county recorded zero murders in the first two months of the year.

The robbers won one of the biggest dives since 2024, with commercial robbers also down 25%. This ranges from 32 cases last year to 24 cases this year, but other robbers like public spaces have been cut by more than half from 47 to 23.

Home intrusions have also been cut in half, with 29 reported so far this year, and these cases have been reduced from 87 to 45, with businesses and other non-residential sites seeing similar relief.

Grand Larseny, the county's most common major crime, is currently declining with fewer than 100 cases compared to last year.

The attacks also decreased from 69 to 57. This is a solid drop that shows less violent conflict that will turn into serious changes.

Nassau has been curbing the trend with a drop of nearly 18% while car thefts climb in other parts of the country, according to the National Insurance Crimes Bureau.

However, the data were not completely positive. One sexual assault and two sexual abuse cases were reported from scratch the previous year in the first two months of 2025.

Nassau neighbors in five districts also saw a near 15% decline in major crimes in January and February compared to the previous year, according to data from the NYPD.

Murders fell by 32%, while shootings fell by more than 20%. This broke 30-year records with the least shooting in the first two months of the year.

“Our comprehensive crime strategy is working,” NYPD commissioner Jessica Tish said in a statement.
