Nassau County executive promises increased police presence and expanded ICE if Mamdani is victorious in NYC

The Nassau County Executive’s Promises in Light of Upcoming Election

The leading official in Nassau County, located on Long Island, New York, has made a commitment to bolster police presence and enhance cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should Zoran Mamdani emerge victorious in the upcoming mayoral election.

Bruce Blakeman, the Republican County Executive, emphasizes public safety and careful fiscal management. His strategy appears to target New York City residents who may be contemplating a move to Long Island if a Democratic candidate takes control of City Hall, as noted by a spokesperson, speaking to the New York Post.

The New York Post reported that this initiative is part of Blakeman’s campaign plan as he prepares to face off against Democratic candidate Seth Koslow in the upcoming race.

“If Mamdani wins, we will definitely hire more police officers and enhance our collaboration with ICE,” stated Chris Boyle, a spokesperson for Blakeman. He added the county actively seeks to attract people and businesses to what they describe as America’s safest county.

In February, Blakeman announced a formal partnership with ICE, which includes assigning ten detectives from the Nassau County Police Department to work as ICE agents. This arrangement enables these detectives to assist in immigration enforcement operations.

The plan includes provisions for county jails to offer temporary detention space for ICE. Local police will notify ICE when an illegal immigrant is arrested and accompany ICE during targeted operations. To date, the county has trained and assigned ten detectives to support ICE with arrests and investigations, along with designating 50 cells for ICE to temporarily hold detainees.

Blakeman recently mentioned that the policy enjoys considerable support, including from Hispanic residents in the county, and he believes it’s not just effective locally, but beneficial across the region.

Details on how the county will further expand its cooperation with ICE remain vague, as reported by the media.

Koslow has indicated that if elected, he would terminate the existing agreement, aligning with Democratic immigration policies.

Mamdani, identifying as a democratic socialist, has made pledges to end New York City’s collaboration with ICE, prohibiting its operations in city-run facilities, and safeguarding immigrant families from federal enforcement actions.

Blakeman has been in his role as Nassau County Executive since 2022. Earlier this year, he was instrumental in passing legislation aimed at banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports at county-owned venues, although a New York appeals court recently put a hold on that ban.
