Natalie Maines: 'Fugly Slut' Trump 'Using Your Gas Money to Fund the Insurrection'

Chicks Singer Criticizes Trump and U.S. Democracy

Natalie Maines, the singer of the Dixie Chicks, made headlines on Tuesday, expressing her disdain for President Trump, labeling him a “scumbag slut,” and criticizing his plans regarding the “insurrectionists.”

Like many on the left, Maines feels that American democracy is “disappearing,” as political trends shift to the right away from the progressive policies of the Biden administration. “Our democracy is disappearing before our eyes,” she lamented. She accompanied her thoughts with an Instagram post that included a portrait of Trump during his second term as president and various images from the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Her post read, “This ugly woman is using your gas money to pay for the rebels. But don’t worry, I’m sure everything will be resolved once she posts a selfie.”

She also mentioned that a previous post calling Trump an “ugly slut” had been removed, expressing skepticism about the longevity of her new post. “Repost to spread the message,” she urged her followers, tagging it with #epsteinfiles, #democracy, #freespeech, and her choice of words.

For nearly ten years, Maines has remained away from the public eye since she drew national attention in 2003 with her band, the Dixie Chicks, criticizing America during performances at home and abroad. This backlash resulted in a significant decline in airplay for their music, which impacted their careers during the peak of their popularity.

Maines and the band became an early example of grassroots boycotts akin to the more recent backlash Bud Light faced for partnering with transgender activists, which adversely affected its sales.

In 2020, the Dixie Chicks changed their name to “The Chicks,” distancing themselves from the Southern connotations of the word “Dixie.” Post-name change, the band went on hiatus. While founding member Laura Lynch passed away in 2023, Maines, along with Marty Maguire and Emily Strayer, have attempted to tour but have not regained their previous level of success.

Recently, Maines was among the celebrities on the left who expressed joy at the passing of conservative country musician Toby Keith, who died from cancer in 2024. Maines has long been critical of Keith.
