Nathan Wade says Willis relationship has ‘no place’ in the courtroom

Nathan Wade, a former special prosecutor in Fulton County, Georgia, said his former romantic relationship with District Attorney Fani Willis has “no place” to be discussed in court.

“We felt we handled it in a professional manner. We kept our personal lives personal and private,” Wade told MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Wednesday. “And I still believe that it has no place in a courtroom. Not now, not then.”

Wade was asked about his romantic relationship with Willis, which came to light amid former President Trump’s prosecution and the president’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.

He recently said in an interview with ABC News that romantic relationships with colleagues are “as American as apple pie.” He clarified his statement Wednesday, saying his workplace romance “could happen to anyone.”

“This is not to make light of the situation. I’m just saying it could happen to anyone. I’m not saying anything extreme, of course. [it] “It doesn’t happen to everyone, but it can happen,” he said. “It happened to us.”

Wade said their relationship “grew naturally” over time and was “not planned or intentional.”

The special counsel withdrew from the Trump case in mid-March after a judge ruled that either he or Willis needed to step down to continue the case.

Judge Scott McAfee opposed the Republican request to remove Willis, but he criticized the conflict of interest created by both men presiding over such a high-profile case.

Mr. Wade tendered his resignation to allow Mr. Willis to continue prosecuting the case. He said Wednesday that he and Willis no longer talk about the incident, but that they remain “close friends” and communicate almost daily about their private lives and the threats each of them has received since their relationship became public. .
