Incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris had led poll after poll influx for about five weeks, but her lead over former President Donald Trump has evaporated, leading to a tie.
Starting on August 6, CacklyMcNeverBorderCzar held a consistent lead. economist/YouGov National Poll of Voters. teeth Not anymore.
On August 6, Kamala led Trump 45-43 percent (+2).
August 13th: Kamala 46/Trump 44 (+2).
August 20: Kamala 46/Trump 43 (+3).
August 27th: Kamala 47/Trump 45 (+2).
September 3rd: Kamala 47/Trump 45 (+2).
Latest economist/YouGov poll, photograph The poll shows the race tied at 45% among 1,464 registered voters from Sept. 8-10, 2024. This is roughly in line with other recent national polls that show the vice president's lead either tied or fading to a slight advantage for Trump.
Of course, this poll doesn't include reactions to the Trump-Harris debate on Tuesday night. While most say Kamala won the debate (and she did), according to various focus groups collected by the media, her victory didn't move the undecideds who will almost certainly choose the next president. Trump was Trump. He had his good moments, but for much of the debate he seemed sulky and defensive. Kamala appeared calm and skilled, and did a great job of digging into Trump's mind, but these focus groups of undecideds said they were still baffled by her frustrating inability to provide policy details.
In a Reuters focus group of 10 undecided voters, six backed Trump and just three backed Kamala.
The takeaway from this is that Kamala won the debate based on issues and style, while Trump won based on concrete policies and voters yearning for change after four years of failure. It's simply a fact that people remember the Trump era much more fondly than the Biden-Harris era, and who can blame them?
The debate was a disappointment for most Trump supporters, but by Monday no one will be talking about it and we will likely be back to a political cycle in which Kamala refuses to do one-on-one interviews or meet with voters, and refuses to answer questions, make media appearances or offer any concrete policy proposals.
Tuesday's debate revolved around Kamala wanting to make 2024 a referendum on President Trump. She could have done that if she had a policy roadmap for the future… and that's the only way she can win.
