NATO Executive Director Supports Trump’s Remarks on Russian Airspace Incidents
On Thursday, NATO Executive Director Mark Latte expressed his support for President Trump’s suggestion to take down Russian planes entering airspace, though he emphasized it should be a last resort.
During an interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” host Brian Kilmeade inquired about Latte’s stance on Trump’s comments, specifically referencing Germany’s reluctance to endorse such actions.
Latte responded, “If you find it necessary.” He affirmed his agreement with Trump, noting that military personnel are well-trained for such situations. “Our army knows how to handle this,” he added.
He highlighted that Russian incursions into NATO airspace have been ongoing for decades, and member states are equipped to evaluate threats and make decisions on how to protect civilians.
Latte pointed out, “For over forty or fifty years, dating back to the Soviet era, we’ve experienced these invasions. Fighter pilots and troops are always aware of the threat posed by these Russian planes and assess whether they should be escorted out of Allied territory.”
“But there are times when, if needed, we must take action to ensure the safety of our citizens,” he continued.
Recently, three Russian fighters entered Estonia’s airspace for twelve minutes, an action labeled an “unprecedented brave invasion” by Prime Minister Kristen Michal. Following this, Michal called for discussions regarding Article 4 of NATO, which allows member states to present threats to their security or political freedom to the alliance.
This incident in Estonia followed a notable breach of Polish airspace the previous week, prompting Poland to seek consultations within NATO regarding its security.
In the context of ongoing Russian military operations in Ukraine, at least 19 Russian drones violated Polish airspace on September 9th.
After a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelensky earlier in the week, Trump appeared to shift his tone regarding Russia, suggesting Ukraine could achieve victory and potentially reclaim lost territory.
In the interview, Latte dismissed any notion that Trump’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict was inconsistent. “I can’t speak to whether the president has changed his views. However, he has maintained a consistent approach since the beginning of discussions with Putin in February. It’s clear that Putin has no intention of negotiating.”
Latte also remarked on the Kremlin’s defensive reaction to Trump’s comments. “This indicates that the Russians are not quite as capable as they claim. Meanwhile, they are losing a significant number of lives to gain very little ground in Ukraine,” he noted.
“I believe the president’s approach is applying pressure on the Russians again, urging them to take negotiations seriously,” he concluded.
