Rutte on Iran Nuclear Threat: World Safer Now
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte remarked that the global situation is “absolutely” safer now compared to five weeks ago, attributing this to the U.S. efforts in weakening Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Speaking after a meeting with President Donald Trump, Rutte noted that while Trump has expressed disappointment towards several NATO allies, he acknowledged the strong cooperation from many members involved in logistics and support for Operation Epic Fury. Rutte emphasized NATO’s unified stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities.
When asked by a CNN host whether diplomatic means could have been a better approach to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb, Rutte drew parallels to North Korea’s lengthy negotiations which ultimately failed as that nation succeeded in obtaining nuclear weapons. He highlighted NATO’s backing of Trump’s proactive stance to avoid repeating that scenario with Iran.
NATO allies are focused on reducing Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. There’s always a risk if negotiations drag on, that we may miss the window of intervention. I support the president and our actions in the region, as this is crucial for global security.
Rutte pointed out that the potential for Iran to acquire nuclear capabilities poses a serious danger, especially for Israel, and that while negotiations are important, the past should inform future action. He stated that if Trump had not intervened, the consequences could have been dire for Europe and the Middle East.
The world’s safety has improved due to the president’s actions to downgrade these capabilities. This sentiment is shared by many in Europe who recognize the urgency of the situation. NATO remains committed to ensuring Iran does not achieve nuclear capabilities.
These comments come amid Trump’s visible frustration with NATO allies, especially with Spain, which has publicly opposed Iranian operations. Trump has also suggested the possibility of repositioning troops based on alliance effectiveness.
