NATO members 'very concerned' over US stability: Gen. Wesley Clark

Clark explained that while many people previously viewed the US as “stable”, that basis of trust has shifted under President Trump.

“They don’t trust Trump. They don’t understand why he would say something like this. They think it has to do with Trump’s relationship with Vladimir Putin,” Clark said. “They’re really worried because to us, NATO is across the ocean, but to them, Russia is their neighbor.”

Ukrainian leaders have pledged to supply weapons to the country as it enters the third year of the war, and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said a “minimum standard” of aid would be equal to the $43 billion spent annually so far.

“Ukraine won’t get an invitation to join NATO at this point, but they will get a commitment of continued support, including ammunition. … So I think this is still a very positive outcome for Ukraine,” Clark said.

The concerns of the 32 countries come amid growing opposition within the Democratic Party, with the president Joe Bidenhealth situation could overshadow the alliance’s message.

Clark said his response was purely political.

“He doesn’t want to interfere in the domestic affairs of the United States at this point,” Clark said. “He’s just saying he has confidence in the United States and the United States will make the important decisions.”
